Today, aviation piston engines continue to rely on leaded gasoline (Avgas), representing the final stronghold of leaded fuel globally.
The risks associated with leaded fuel are clear, particularly in the United States, where the large aviation fleet faces greater exposure. In a positive step forward, the U.S. aviation industry has united under the EAGLE (Eliminate Gasoline Lead Emissions) initiative, committing to remove leaded fuel from use by 2030.
Across the Atlantic, Europe, after banning lead additive imports starting in 2025, will tolerate its use until 2031.
The drive to eliminate leaded fuel is accelerating, and the path toward an unleadedsky in the future is clearer than ever.
Exciting new fuels like UL-91™, UL-94™, GAMI G100UL™, and SWIFT™ are making their way to market entry, bringing innovation to the forefront, though some compatibility and technical hurdles remain.
As the industry adapts, pilots may face a challenging transition, with various platforms building their own support networks.
